Make a Blue Hen Chicken for Delaware!
Using clay is a great way to stimulate your child's mind. Clay builds fine and large motor skills and encourages creativity. The great thing is, clay is very forgiving. If you mess up, you can just squish it and start again.
This is a lesson about Delaware. It combines pottery, geography and history. Use this lesson as-is for an afternoon of fun, or delve deeper. You and your child can do research about the state. Attach the two balls to make the body and the head.

This is an explanation of the proper way to use "real" clay.
Roll out clay to cut out wings and a comb for the chicken. Be sure to put cloth under your clay, or it will stick to the table.
Cut out two wings and a comb. Don't worry if they aren't perfect. You can shape them with your fingers.
Attach the wings.
Attach the comb.
Use a small piece of clay and form a small coil to shape into a beak.
Attach the beak.
Make eyes with a skewer. Then, use your fingertip to drag the clay down from the head to create the ruffle around the chicken's neck.
And, there you have it...A Blue Hen Chicken!
