Alabama

This is a lesson for my series, Pottery Road Trip. This is a great way to teach your child a little history and a little geography while making pottery. You can use these lessons as a quick way to make an art project, or you can use them as a jumping off point for research. The lessons can be as brief or as in-depth as you would like them to be. The projects are great for all ages and can be adapted to be easier or harder as needed. Pottery is just fun, so let's make some together!

Here are some quick facts about Alabama:

State Abbreviation: AL

State Nickname: The Heart of Dixie or the YellowhammerState

State Motto: “Audemus jura nostra defendere” Translation - We dare defend our rights.

Some Famous People from Alabama:

Harper Lee, writer

Fun Facts:

Montgomery is known as the birthplace of the Confederate States of America.

The word “Alabama” means “TribalTown” in the Creek Indian language.

Huntsville is known as the rocket capital of the world.

Now that you have learned a little about Alabama, let's make a clay project!

We are going to make a clay rocket since Huntsville is known as the rocket capital.

Start with a fat worm

Shape one end to be pointy.

Add 3 triangle shapes to be wings.

Source

Make sure the rocket is flat enough on the bottom to stand.

Use a pencil or skewer to draw designs.

Admire your Alabama artwork!
